Reports of Americans being killed almost daily in Iraq have some Capital Region military families and residents worried that the ongoing conflict has spun out of control.
Despite President Bush's declaring an end to major fighting on May 1, a series of interviews over the past week emphasized that uncertainty, disbelief and even bitterness have crept into daily discussions about the U.S. occupation. While supportive of the troops, many have become uncomfortable with America's post-invasion planning.
``I am very, very upset,'' said Larry LaValley of Rotterdam, whose son, Army Sgt. Shawn LaValley, 22, suffered serious wounds to his lower extremities earlier this month when his convoy was attacked in Iraq. The soldier, a graduate of Schenectady High School in 1998, also was hit by shrapnel in a separate attack last month in a less serious incident.
