Fed: Beazley says Australia needs to spend more on research
Opposition leader KIM BEAZLEY says Australians will be a sad bunch by the end of this
century if spending on research and development is not stepped up.
New figures show Australia's research and development spending now trails Iceland,
one of the world's smallest nations.
Mr BEAZLEY says those who will succeed this century will be those who invest in innovative
ideas, skill their people and ensure that they maintain their scientific endeavour at
peak performance.
He says things have got to change on it or there will be a sad bunch of Australians
by the end of this century.
Mr BEAZLEY says Labor plans to boost research scholarships as an essential start.
